Creating Posters - The Cassowary

Year 2 has been completing some fabulous work after reading about The Cassowary.
The students have been gathering information and using that to create posters. This has been part of our work on writing factual text.
Please enjoy these shots.

As part of our STEAM Program we have been investigating bees. the students have really gained a great deal of information and today we tried to draw like scientists.
we watched the video about Austin's butterfly so that if we failed at our drawing we would feel ok about it.

Mr Coote also spoke to the school today about FAIL. First Attempt In Learning.  It is ok to fail!
Here is a video of us drawing.

We will have a second attempt next week.

Friday was an exciting afternoon where we researched the bee in more detail. Our afternoon began with a hunt for bees in the schoolyard. Then we brainstormed what we knew so far.
We watched some clips and were astounded to find that bees aren't black and yellow like be thought but rather brown and yellow. We also learnt that they have four wings.

We researched the Honeybee which is quite common and learnt that the male bees are called drones. Drones don't have a stinger and all they do is live in the hive with the Queen Bee.
The worker bees are all female bees that have a stinger and use their long probiscus (tongue) to slurp up nectar. The worker bees gather up pollen on their hairy abdomen and in their pollen sacs.
Did you know that once a bee stings you then it dies?

We acted out our bee facts to the flight of the bumblebee.

Bounce on Wednesdays

Year 2 are still thoroughly enjoying their bounce lessons. This week we continued to practice our holds as well as some forward rolls.

Creating Posters about Addition and Subtraction

Year 2 has been very creative! As part of the learning experience about word problems the students created posters about Addition and Subtraction.

The criteria was that they had to be imaginative, colourful, readable and informative. Several students were chosen to display their final design and everyone thought about what makes a great poster.

3D Objects - Creating with straws and polydrons.

Year 2 enjoyed a fabulous afternoon of learning. It was so much fun that it hardly felt like learning! Straws, tape and plastic shapes were used to create the faces and edges of 3D objects. The students were very engaged which is the way we like it!
