The Water Cycle - where does our water go after it rains?

The Year 2 students enjoyed a lesson today about puddles and how salt water becomes fresh water. Mrs Davis learnt something new too.
After investigating the cycle of water the students completed a drama activity where they planned to tell the cycle with a drama. Here are a few of the amazing stories...

We added the words Precipitation, Evaporation and Condensation to this picture.

Also we put out two saucers of salty water to see what will happen.

Year 2 is learning about Antarctica.

As part of our Aussie Environments Unit, we have asked Ms Chiz to help us to research about Antarctica. You may wonder why? Did you know that no country owns Antarctica, but several countries look after it. Australia looks after a large part of it. That's why we thought it would be good to learn about it.
Here we are drawing some of the flora and fauna in Antarctica.

Studying Aussie Environments...Take a Visit to Minnamurra Rainforest.

The day was sunny but crisp and Stage 1 students were off to visit the rainforest. We learnt about the layers of the rainforest and the plants and animals that are in the rainforest in the classroom, but the trip and actually walking in the rainforest was unbelievable.
The students built bird homes, explored the leaves and sifted through the leaf litter from the rainforest floor to look for little creatures.
Then we walked the boardwalk to explore the rainforest. It was fresh, exhilarating and educational.

How do we recycle water at Inaburra?

Today we had two guests speak to us during our Science and Technology lesson.

Firstly Mr Coote spoke to us about the water that flows into our sensory playground. Unfortunately it is not recycled water. Mr Coote explained to us about what the architect said about the reason why we couldn't recycle the water. The tap that is used is a slow flowing tap and also turns off after a short amount of time. The students enjoyed chatting with Mr Coote.

Secondly Mr Mundy spoke to us about the rainwater tanks that we use to store the rain water that we  recycle. We use this 'dirty water' to water the gardens and flush the toilets.

The Jump and Split Strategies

The Jump and Split Strategies.

If you would like to help your child work on these strategies at home, these video will teach you how to do it. Or if you would like to understand your child's pre-test for this week, these videos may help also.

In class we will be using the Jump Strategy to solve both addition and subtraction problems.

Year 2 Students are Learning to Write Information Reports

Year 2 students have been reading the beautiful book, Where the Forest Meets the Sea by Jeannie Baker. It is about looking after the Daintree Rainforest.

There are many amazing animals in the Daintree Rainforest. We are thinking about the topics that each paragraph is about and finding information about the appearance, habitat, movement, diet, breeding and other information about the Ulysses Butterfly.

How do we Access Water to Use at School?

Year 2 went on a Water hunt...

Here are some shots of what we found.

For Homework, students will be looking at examples of how they access water in their homes.

Next week we will go and look at our water tanks at school and Mr Coote will come and chat with us about the way we recycle our water.
