Genius Hour

Year 2 are really enjoying Genius Hour each week.
Some of the students are up to sharing what they have learned.
For the first exercise all the students are preparing a poster to share their new found information.
Here are some students who shared today. Some of the topics were Dinosaurs, The Milky Way, Animals with Bones, Galaxies, World War 1 and World War 2 Injuries, Kookaburras, Greece, The Sun and Acids. The students love researching something that they want to know about.

It is all very exciting and the students LOVE LEARNING!

Research in Preparation for Writing an Information Report

Today the Year 2 students worked in pairs to find information about the buff breasted paradise kingfisher. This bird is one of the species that inhabit the Daintree Rainforest which is written about in the book, Where the Forest Meets the Sea by Jeanie Baker. We are currently studying this book.

Here are groups of students reading and taking notes about the bird.

The students will then change their notes into paragraphs about the bird.

World Maker Day

Today was World Maker Day...

That means create something by thinking...

The students were asked to create a flying object using 2 sheets of A4 paper. Then we tested to see which object that was made flew the farthest.

Here is a photographic recount of what happened.

It was really interesting to see the winner.

Then we discussed the reasons...

Then we thought about...design, make, test, design again, remake, test...

Water Hunt

Last week Year 2 went on  a water hunt around the school to see how many water points we could find. Mr Mundy showed us the rain water tanks that collect water from the roof of the senior school. We also found taps with tap heads that are painted purple so that we don't drink from them in the gardens. The drains were always lower than the surrounding ground to help the water drain out and most buildings had a fire hose.

Bounce

Week 2 of gymnastics was a blast!

Rainforest Imagery

After visiting the beautiful waterfall at Minnamurra Rainforest 2P looked at how we could create imagery in our writing. We began with a simple sentence and extended it to include a more detailed description. We're excited to share some examples:

I can see the beautiful trees reflecting into the water in the morning.  By Ella M

I can see the beautiful, wet, calm waterfall flowing into a river. By Ronin G

I can see the beautiful, bright, yellow sunset in the distance, above the trees. By Delilah H

I can see rushing water going down the rocks. By Adam S

I can see the fantastic sunset. By Charlie B

I can feel the wind softly touching me on my hands. By Christopher M

I can see the beautiful, bright, yellow sun setting behind the trees. By Victoria J

Genius Hour

Today we started researching to answer the questions we were wondering about. The Library was buzzing as students read and recorded information. We thank the mums who came to help us research as well as Mrs Tasker who prepared the books for us to use.

Mothers' Day Breakfast

Today we celebrated our mums.

What a wonderful occasion when the mums of the students in the Junior School arrived and were treated to a delightful breakfast.

Fathers, teachers and Year Six students served the mums. they were dressed in 'penguin' suits and looked amazing.

Ethan Edwards read a poem and Skye Blackett read a piece about mums.

The occasion was so beautiful. Thank you Mr Coote and Mrs Donnelly.
