Visual Literacy

This week Year 2 looked at text placement within the picturebook Fox by Margaret Wild. Year 2 then chose images and wrote their own text on the page considering where it would best fit and how to make it interesting. Here is some of our work:

Speeches About Many Things

Today the students we given the opportunity to speak about something that was their own choice.

The range of topics was amazing.

I really enjoyed observing the students talk enthusiastically about their topics. The students are improving in both their speaking skills and their listening skills.

Next week the topic is...
Week 6 - Living Things. Chose a living thing that is of interest.

Research 3 interesting facts.

Investigating our little creatures.

We were so excited to look at the changes that may have happened over the last few days.

We predicted what we might see.

Our Unit of work is called Watch It Grow and so we also planted bean seeds to observe.

Old Toys - Parents or Grandparents

Our History Unit topic - Toy Story allows us to look at Toys - Past and Present.
The students brought along either the real thing or a photo of the toy that was played with by an older generation.

The students were very excited to share their findings.

In Library, we have also been looking at old toys and the materials that the toys were made of then compared to the materials used now.

Next week the speech is a free choice.

No toys are to be brought in to share.

Studying our Little Creatures.

It was time to look at what was happening to the Helicoverpa Armigera. We enjoyed observing the changes.

We will keep you updated about what happens next...

Literacy.

Year 2 are loving the book, Fox by Margaret Wild. We finally finished reading the story today. It was full of so much rich vocabulary. The words will be listed for the students to use in their own writing...hopefully.

We are really studying visual literacy this term and this book is a fabulous text to use to study that aspect of English.

Today in particular we looked at the way the writing in text is presented amongst the pictures. In groups we thought of and discussed the reasons why the text was placed in a particular way.

Then several students reported the findings of their group.

Miss Plummer also presented her thoughts...

Next week we will all have a try at adding text to a drawing and presenting it in an interesting or visually pleasing way. Each student will need to justify why they included the writing where they did.

Science Unit

Watch It Grow is the title of the Science Unit that Stage 1 students are studying this term. Today we observed some neonates. We will be watching them grow over the next few weeks. We will be writing a learning journal about our observations.

Here we are putting the neonates in with their diet.
